The ``rank'' of a mathematical object is defined whenever that object is Free. In general, the rank of a Free
object is the Cardinality of the Free generating Subset 
. The word ``rank'' also refers to several
unrelated concepts in mathematics involving groups, quadratic forms, sequences, statistics, and tensors.
